Junior Competitive Program

No tryouts!  No experience is necessary—no matter what grade you are!

  1. Eligibility:
This program is open to youth, grades 9-12, who are eligible to participate in Souhegan High School sports (generally Amherst and Mont Vernon residents). They do not need to be attending Souhegan to be part of the youth program, but must be available during all practice times.

While crew is not a varsity sport at Souhegan, it does require a varsity-level commitment in time and effort. All practices are mandatory.
  2. Spring 2019 Schedule:
The fall season officially begins Tuesday, 3/05/19 and runs until our last regatta on Sunday, 6/02/19.

    Practice Schedule:
Before the ice is out on the lake, practice will be held Monday through Friday afternoons after school, 3:30-5:30 PM.

When water practice begins in April, practice will be Monday-Thursday, 3:30-5:45 PM and either:
    Friday, 3:30-5:45 PM OR
    Saturday, 8:30-10:15 AM

*They will alternate between Friday and Saturday practice each week.

The final land and water practice schedule will be determined after all athletes have registered and practice has begun. Athletes must be available for ALL practices, land and water.

There will be at least 4 regattas this spring, generally held on Sundays.

Please review the Practice & Racing Calendar. (Will be updated with final race schedule during March.)
  4. Transportation:
Rowers are responsible for their own transportation to water practices and races, though there are many carpooling opportunities.

  5. Fee (per racing season):
    Returning rowers: $415
    New Rowers: $415 + $40 for a racing jersey

A fundraising opportunity will be provided during the fall and spring racing seasons and all members are required to participate. However, athletes may opt out of the fundraising during the registration process, and pay an additional $115.

Souhegan students may join the Souhegan High School Crew Club for free and participate in land training only. In order to participate in water training and race as Souhegan Crew Club, they must become members of Baboosic Lake Rowing Club. If interested in participating in land sessions only, please contact us at contact@baboosiclakerowingclub.org and we will provide paperwork to be submitted.

Several need-based membership grants are available each season. If interested, please contact us at contact@baboosiclakerowing.org for details.
  6. Swim Test:
All rowers must pass a swim test before going on the water. This consists of swimming 100 yards, treading water 10 minutes, and putting on a life jacket while treading water.

We will arrange one opportunity for the swim test. (This must be passed only once for each member.)

If there are concerns about swimming ability, please let us know. This will not preclude participation in crew.
  7. Souhegan Sports Cap Does Not Apply:
The Souhegan sports monetary cap does not apply to Crew. Souhegan Crew Club is not a varsity sport supported by the school budget, but is managed by Baboosic Lake Rowing Club. We receive no financial support from the school.
  8. Required Clothing:
The only uniform required for racing is a racing jersey ($37), available on the JL Team Store site, and black bottoms. Black tight-fitting bottoms (aka trou) can also be purchased from JL, or at other sports stores (e.g. Compression shorts from Under Armour). Alternatively, a uni can be purchased from JL, which includes both top and bottom.

For practice, the athlete will require good-fitting high-quality running shoes and appropriate outdoor fitness clothing (not cotton!). We row in the rain, snow, wind, cold and heat! We get it all.
